South River NJ Home Town Story

Part philosophical memoir, tribute to a blue-collar football town, and historical snapshot of the mid-twentieth century, this book is a microcosm of the American Dream. From war-torn Eastern Europe, we follow as the author’s father escapes to the New World and settles in New Jersey to raise a family. Here, there was opportunity for everyone, and patriarch Tata instilled a strong work ethic and moral code in his children. One of these Polish kids was the author, influenced by his family and wider community of South River (teachers, coaches, mentors, friends) to reach new heights as a second-generation American that culminated with a “gude jobb” in a successful career and a “gude life,” as Tata would say, filled with happiness and love.

C. Edwin Tracy traces a momentous time in American history, chronicling the popular culture—movies, music, sports—of the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s, while also recounting the injustices of the Jim Crow era that galvanized him and other students of his high school into a local rebellion. Throughout it all, European immigrants like Tata were forging new lives and providing the next generation with the means for success. This family memoir honors Tata and shares his many wisdoms, while also reflecting on life in small-town, blue-collar America and weaving together memorable characters, personal anecdotes, and pivotal historic moments.

THE BIG PICTURE

(AHNSAD provokes the reader to expand his or her perspective of existence)

When we consider the overall scheme of life, when we consciously pause, reflect and ponder the imagery, the big picture and the majesty of if all:

  • The vast reaches and endless expanse of the universe: (the skies, the moon, the sun, the planets, the stars, the galaxy and the hundreds of billions of other galaxies, and the distant space in between. And the inner space between the molecules, atoms, nuclei, protons, neutrons, electrons, mesons, bosons, etc. which make up existence),

  • The incomprehensible and bewildering forces of the world in each moment: (the energy embedded in sunshine, the inexorable motion of oceans, rivers and mountain streams, the pulse of transportation traffic, the electromagnetic waves of communication, the rise and fall of the seasons, the fires, the snows, the winds, the storms, the floods, the heated core and revolution of the earth, etc.),

  • The numberless stories of each and every life: (husbands, wives, children, relatives, friends, co-workers, strangers and foreigners in other lands, etc. And other life forms: animals, fishes, reptiles and such),

  • The billions of ancestors who proceeded us on this earth: (parents, grandparents, great grandparents, forgotten forefathers and foremothers, and other notable ancestors: Mother Teresa in India, Mohammed in Saudi Arabia, Jesus in Israel, Marcus Aurelius in Rome, Plato and Aristotle in Greece, Confucius and Lao Tzu in China, Buddha in Nepal, Prophet Elijah in Israel, Vishnu and ancient Hindu philosophers of India, the Egyptians and Moses, Abraham in Iraq, early man, and the amoeba from which it all came),

  • And finally…….The sight, sound, and touch of another human being and the untold acts of kindness and consideration which occur in our lives each and every day,

We humble ourselves in appreciation and gratitude,

…. and become ‘still and quiet’.
